Retired from Cal Poly SLO and moved to L.A. to live with my significant other in 2005. We've remodeled his 1910 Craftsman house, gone on wonderful travels, and collected many stray neighborhood cats. In addition to volunteering at the Natural History Museum, I also work with Stray Cat Alliance doing TNR in these economically challenged neighborhoods around where we live. My next project: Leaving L.A.! I have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Well, in June I’m off to Yellowstone Park in my Volkswagen pop top camper with the retro peace signs, etc. Then I’m going to Oxford University in England around the Fourth of July--my dearest ex-wife: number three, (oh, all right, number four) is graduating with her postdoc in nanotechnology. Will be making my annual pilgrimage to Santa Barbara for a week for the Fiesta--staying at Fess Parker’s on Cabrillo Boulevard. Get in a couple of rounds of golf out at Sandpiper. Dinner at (Ed) Holdren’s. The concerts at the courthouse gardens(clip from last year attached). The music and food court at De La Guerra Plaza. The kids parade. The equestrian parade – – hey officer, what’s your horse’s name, Double Time? But enough about politics….The video clip is from the courthouse concert last year.
On the way down. I like to make my first pit stop at Andersen’s Pea Soup in Santa Nella. I always ask the waitress for a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Invariably, the waitress says sir, I’m sorry we only serve pea soup. Whereupon I say yuuuuck! I hate pea soup, just bring me a strawberry shortcake. Wave at my alma mater, Cal Poly, on my way by San Luis Obispo.
Then of course there’s hot August nights in, well, August, in Reno. Should be a fun summer. Thinking I might cruise down in my black 66 Corvette Stingray, desert boots, white T-shirt, blue jeans, white socks, just for laughs.

Santa Barbara, CA to Athens, GA and Some Things in Between
It has been a busy life since I walked across the stage of the old “Greek Theater” and left SMHS for MCRD San Diego in June of “63”. A life marked by a wife Joan of now 49 years who I married in 1969 a week after my last Vietnam tour ended and I returned to California for my next duty assignment in Tennessee. We had a son and a daughter who also entered the military Ryan via West Point (Now living here in Athens, GA with his College Professor wife and our 2 grand kids Rowen and Jane) and Gwen our daughter an Army Nurse (Now a Civilian Nurse Practitioner married to a USNR ER Doctor and living in Texas).
Joan has retired from Nursing (I met her a week before I left for that last trip to Vietnam while she was caring for my aunt at Cottage Hospital and we dated for 2 weeks before I left--- Yes you got the dates right we had less than 14 dates.) Now we both volunteer around Georgia and help out our family and friends.
As you will see below my volunteering sometimes gets out of hand. This year I was nominated for inclusion in the Georgia Military Veteran’s Hall of Fame at the Capitol in Atlanta, not sure I deserve it, but I do appreciate the thought.
The Justification Affidavit is attached below and was submitted by a board of military officers in my region of Georgia. It might bring you up to date on why I seem to work harder in retirement than I ever did when working those two jobs it refers to for over 40 years each.
I wish I could get together with all of you and talk about what life has taught us along the way, I sure learned a great deal after I left SMHS and have a feeling I just might make a few of you and my old teachers smile at what I’ve seen and done.
I owe a lot to some of you who I met along the way and look back at my SMHS years with all the pride the Scarlet Red and Royal Blue bestowed on me. Where it left off the Scarlet and Gold of the USMC Took over and even though I said I’d never go back to school again, when this 17 year old left Santa Barbara, I eventually found the time at night to attend college and get a BS, MPA and Ph.D and write 2 books while navigating “the rocks and shoals” of life’s stormy seas until I found the Lighthouse that drew me home.
Thanks Tim, Bill, Tony, Susan, Mike, Bob, Jackie and Ray and many others of you teachers like Mr. Newman, Mr. Zeier (sp) and of course, my personal Favorite.. Mr. Jackson, who when he heard I was leaving the day after graduation for the Marines wrote in my yearbook, “To the living example of an American Problem!!” I’ve always loved and tried to live up to the meaning behind that “left handed compliment”.
Have a great time at the reunion and if I don’t lose my mobility by the 60th, and I’m still here, Maybe God will see fit to lighten my schedule and let us get together once more. If not, If you are ever in the Athens GA area look me up and you can use one of our spare bedrooms.
I put Ray's Georgia Military Veteran’s Hall of Fame Nomination at the very end of this page. I know you will all want to read it but it made this section pretty long so I thought I would break it up.

After 50 years in Banking with Santa Barbara Bank & Trust I retired as Vice President and Manager in Commercial Real Estate. The timing was great as the Bank was purchased by Union Bank. Sold the house in Goleta and moved to Plano, Texas to be with my children (son & daughter) and four grandchildren rangeing in ages from 4 to 18 (2 boys and 2 girls). Our 18 year old grandson has been accepted to SMU here in Texas. He has written and published 2 books and is a wonderful writer. I just celebrated my 50th wedding anniversary with a family trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Married, Mike Ray (class of 1961) on June 30th, 1963 and he is still drumming to the beat.
Hope everyone has a great time at the reunion.

First married in my senior year, I subsequently outlived two husbands. My 2 sons have fathered 7 grands and the 2 step-kids have 3 step-grands; their range of ages from 8 to 20. Being a grandmother is pure joy. Eventually a teaching credential led me to a career in elementary education with a special interest in early childhood. Took a right turn out of the classroom working with teachers focusing on the teaching of elementary mathematics. Became passionate about CA mathematics and volunteered on state committees to influence change including a term as President of the California Mathematics Council. Currently I get: a “little-kids fix” leading Story Time at the local library for preschoolers, my “social interactions” via membership in garden clubs, lot of “unconditional love” from four furry felines, and “personal satisfaction” through re-envisioning a garden sanctuary around my retirement house in Orcutt (Santa Maria). At this stage in my journey I am healthy and life is good.

I still love living in Guerneville, a small country town on the Russian River. We are about 15 miles West of Santa Rosa and 80 miles North of San Francisco. I finally retired after 35 years of being a writer/illustrator/consultant with my own business, The Idea Works. I designed logos, brochures, ads, signage, labels, and other business identity products and marketing materials for local companies. It was fascinating work, brainstorming with each client to come up with the best message and look to entice their customers. My clients were generally quite interesting, creative, entrepreneurial types.
I met David by going on E-Harmony after I retired and had time for a relationship. I recommend that site to anyone single and looking. We have been together for about 8 years. We both enjoy the trees, birds, museums, concerts, plays, camping, and travel.
I am content these days to do mostly just what I want to do, loving life and painting, writing, singing, swimming, meditation, and tending to my flowers and yard. I also enjoy finally trying out the “housewife” role. Please come by if you are in our neck of the woods. We have a comfortable couch for guests.

We won't be able to make it, but look forward to your update for the 50th! My wife graduated from San Marcos in 66. We moved to Bend, Oregon twenty-two years ago. We love it up here and rarely get back to Santa Barbara.
Maier - Gilda (Maier) Smith - 2018 update
2014 we retired to Joshua Tree, we back up to the JT National park, bought a beautiful home and we sit at 3311 feet above sea level, and have spectacular views. On our first Christmas, two days after, it snowed. That was fun, since I’ve rarely been around snow.
I’ve done a number of different classes, pottery, metal work which I was going to try welding, but it scared me, so I designed and set up pieces to be welded. which was fun.
Finally, I found my calling in designing gourds. I have an instructor that is well known and respected and wonderful artist. I love it and invested in everything I needed to be able to get the work done.
I’m in the process of setting up a work shop in our garage. I plan on making this a business, and there is something about working with gourds that makes me feel grounded. The designs and art are endless and I already have a binder full of ideas.
Plan on more traveling as time allows, one trip a year, different country.
Not a grandparent yet, three kids and not one is married. I told them not to marry young, they need to travel and enjoy life. I thought they never listened to me, THEY TOOK MY ADVISE. My daughter is a flight attendant and travels the world. My oldest son lives in San Diego, works for Maxima Oil and other son lives in Mammoth and is big on snowboarding, he is a brewer and starting up another business.
Love retirement, I consider all of us were given the gift to enjoy a long and wonderful life. No complaints.
Stay well and healthy.

Unfortunately due to a job transfer for my Dad, I had to leave all of my childhood friends from Hope School, La Cumbre Jr. High and SMHS and move to Ventura where I actually Graduated from Buena H.S. I met my wife of 48yrs. in my 11th grade history class and we married after my 2nd year of College. Very soon after that, I was “Drafted” into the Army and luckily assigned to Germany, where we spent 2 years touring all over Europe together! After finishing College in 1971 I was immediately hired by Chrysler Corporation launching a 40 year career in the Automobile Industry. I of course didn’t stay with Chrysler for the whole 40 yrs., there was Nissan, Mitsubishi, Hummer, Infiniti and many others before retiring… Sort of retiring! BTW: The Auto Industry is crazy about “Transfers” and we ended up making 19 household moves before settling in on a great big Lake here in Dawsonville, Georgia. With our own Dock on the Lake and all the “fun water toys” to go with it… this brings Joy to lots of Family n’ Friends! Places we’ve lived? Minneapolis, Boston, Jacksonville, Fl., Orlando, Phoenix, Az., Wisconsin, Denver and back n’ forth to SoCal with different promotions and assignments! Whee-ooo! Glad to be settled! So, I thought I’d retire at some point, but got into the “Consulting Biz” and currently under contract with Volkswagen helping them with Customer Satisfaction, Owner Loyalty and Process Improvement. Plus I own a company that builds Log Homes > www.strongwoodga.com Family? 4 Great Kids > 2 Boys, 2 Girls… Our youngest daughter was a “Special Down Syndrome” child and our other daughter was adopted from India. Hmmmm… lots of challenges as they all grew up, but all is Super now that they are mature Adults (sort of…Lol) with families of their own! And Life Today? Well, life these days… it’s all about the 10 wonderful Grand-kids! 4 Boys – 6 Girls from age 4 to 18! Love those Grands!! Cute, Smart, Fun… Just like yours, Right? Looking forward to catching up with all of you and creating more memories!

Hi! I live in Templeton, Ca., horse and wine country, during the weekend and in the San Joaquin Valley during the week where I work as a bilingual speech pathologist. I have not had my nose to the grind stone all of these years as I have only worked in my field for a cumulative 11 yrs. In between I was raising twins and then my son from a second marriage. I also sailed with my husband from Santa Barbara to Costa Rica, wrote a book called "Forbidden Custody", and later became a professional auctioneer. Most, of the time, however, I have just been riding horses and sorting cattle. I look forward to seeing all of you this coming summer.

Reddin - Sharon (Reddin) Iverson - update 2018
Ron and Sharon Reddin Iverson: Some of you may know the story of Ron and I meeting at our 10th high school reunion and marrying 6 months later. Our son, Eric was born our first year together. It seems that life has been very busy in the 44 plus years since and here are a few highlights.
Ron returned to school soon after we were married, having previously received a BA in Sociology from Pomona. His second BA was in Religious Studies at UCSB, followed by a Masters in Education at Cal Poly-SLO in Counseling Guidance. We lived first in Santa Barbara where I also went to UCSB, receiving a BFA in ceramic sculpture, and later worked as production manager for a stoneware manufacturing company based in San Luis Obispo while Ron went to Cal-Poly. Our son, Eric, attended Montessori pre-school in San Luis Obispo, and Montessori grammar school when we returned to Santa Barbara, followed by La Cumbre Jr High and SBHS. As a young man he lived in Aptos near Santa Cruz where he studied music composition and opera (counter-tenor) at Cabrillo College. He started the reggae band, Soul Majestic (www.soulmajestic.com), and later married Oriana, a singer/songwriter. They now live in Santa Barbara and are working on their 6th album. One of their albums was recorded at Bob Marley’s studio in Jamaica. They have twice done 50-city tours of the U.S. and Canada, and recently performed in Fiji. Locally they’ve played Santa Barbara County Bowl with KJEE’s Summer Roundup 2017, the Live Oak Festival and other venues. They can be heard at SoHo Music Club several times a year. We have two energetic and creative grandsons, Emani 13 and Azure 8, who are endlessly entertaining. We enjoy sharing museum outings, music concerts and road trips with them, and just hanging at the beach or hiking in the nearby mountains.
Ron worked for the Santa Barbara Superior Court as a Family Custody Mediator for 25 years, segueing into private practice as a mediator and evaluator upon retirement. He concurrently attended a PhD program in Clinical Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute and now maintains a full time practice in Santa Barbara (www.RonaldIverson.com). For the last 50 years I’ve been involved in Egyptian dance, teaching and performing throughout the U.S., and in Canada, Israel, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, England, Scotland, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. I performed in Cairo, Egypt during several summer seasons in the late 80’s, early 90’s, and have taught as a member of the Nile Group of Egyptian dancers, teachers and choreographers in Cairo (www.shareenelsafy.com). Ron and I published a Middle Eastern Dance and Arts Magazine for 10 years that was distributed to readers in 42 countries. The feature articles from that time are digitally available (www.thebestofhabibi.com).
Ron started Transcendental Meditation and studied with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Europe in the 70’s, and taught for a number of years. My meditation practice began shortly after our memorable meeting at the SMHS reunion at the El Paseo in September of ’73, and years later I traveled to Switzerland to study with Maharishi and complete teacher training courses there. I attended classes in Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology Program (before Ron’s degree). Currently I’ve been frequenting writers conferences and working on a project about my experiences in Egypt over a thirty year period. Ron is still contemplating turning his 650-page dissertation, “Moved to Tears by Divine Presence: Transference, Sacred Experiencing and Self-Development,” into something more accessible to the general public.

What I probably recall most of all about beginning my San Marcos High School experience was the stark contrast it represented from the previous two years I spent living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After several years of very diverse and interesting (and sometimes quite exciting experiences in Africa, moving to Santa Barbara (first time my family had been in CA) became somewhat of a new challenge for me. The SMHS campus was so large as was its student population and staff, compared to where I had just been. Yet it seemed there was a welcoming atmosphere on the campus of this new school. I believe this opportunity for interaction and the friendly spirit of the SMHS Royals have left me with the valued memories and special thoughts I still hold for my high school years at SMHS and all my classmates and friends.
Sawtelle - Susan (Sawtelle) Herron - 2018 update
In 2015 Mike and I moved to Cuenca Ecuador to try life as expats. We are really enjoying the slower pace of life of the Latin American culture. Cuenca is such an exciting and vibrant city with many artists both expat and local in all forms from painting, to writing, to theater to whatever artistic endeavor one wants to pursue.
Mike is still writing and is just finishing his 7th book which will be published soon. Since moving to Ecuador I have found a little niche in preparing book covers for many of the expat authors living in Cuenca. I am not a graphic designer, one of my clients calls me her "Photoshop Lady" as I manipulate the images they provide and make the cover they have in mind come to life. I am also still working for the property management company I did when living in Georgia. Technology makes it so easy to be an expat and still stay involved.
I enjoy photography and have just started looking into Stock Photography. I recently put 3 pictures up to test the waters. It is too early to see if anything will come of this venture as I will need hundreds more pictures. Just walking around Cuenca give me that opportunity plus the travel we have planned.

My Father moved the Wilberger clan from Eugene, Oregon (where I was born) to Santa Barbara, CA in 1950 when I was 5 yrs. old. I am the oldest of 5, all of whom are San Marcos Royal High graduates. We all benefited from the huge post World War II building boom across the U.S., especially in Santa Barbara. My Father was able to hook up with (then contractor) Mayor MacGillvary (Sandy's Father), helped build some large commercial projects, including the Lake Cachuma spillway, and others. My parents were one of the first families to buy a home in the new Marine Terrace community, and later bought the property on Auhay at Hollister.
I started a college career at S.B. Com. College, and began managing a law office for Chuck Eckert, the only attorney in the Goleta Valley. His Father, "Chili" owned the Rexall Drug Store (I think it also had a soda fountain) and was our local pharmacist. My Mother is 93 and stills lives in Santa Barbara in the house my Father built for us. My two brothers and two sisters still live in parts of California.
I'm the risk taker in my family, having been married twice, have two grown kids & four grandkids. I have owned and managed two small businesses, before spending a year living in Florida working in the legal field. I went back to school later in life and completed two Masters Degrees in Business. My husband and I are now both technical writers, love to travel and have had fun visiting parts of Australia (Sydney & Cairns), and loved our trip to all parts, East and West of London. We live in an awesome golf resort in the East Valley of Arizona with our two really, really spoiled Rat Terriers, Freckles & Bandit.
See you in August

Wherever I've lived since San Marcos (Quincy, MA; Burke, VA; Long Beach, CA) or travelled (Micronesia, Singapore, Manila, Romania, Israel, Europe, etc.), Santa Barbara will always be home to me. My teachers and classmates at San Marcos were at the heart of that home. I'm in good health, a grandfather of six, father of three, a happily married husband in a second marriage. I've been a member of the CA bar for over 40 years, the VA bar for 20 years. I practiced in Santa Barbara for 13 years before going to the East Coast. I was privileged to teach for three institutions of higher education while practicing law. I specialized in constitutional or first amendment law, trusts and estates, general litigation, and nonprofit law. I am now serving as General Counsel, director and corporate secretary with a very big nonprofit corporation,The Salvation Army, and its numerous subsidiaries, including a captive insurance company. Sometimes when people ask what I do, I tell them that I'm in insurance (which is true). The anxiety level goes down and we can talk about important things like the wisdom of managing risks. I sail and have a V Star 950 motorcycle and play keyboards for a Persian church band every Sunday. My Farsi is not as good as my Spanish. There are people to help on a regular basis with the grace and love given to us. That is one of the most satisfying and fulfilling parts of our lives
